UMA CHIP Chair

This project promotes research, dissemination, and training in the field of microelectronics, in line with the growing demand for specialized professionals in this area.

UMA CHIP Chair

An initiative to promote microelectronics from Málaga

The UMA CHIP Chair, also linked to the Málaga Microelectronics brand, is an initiative of the University of Málaga aimed at promoting research, training and knowledge transfer in the field of microelectronics and semiconductors.
Its objective is to respond to the growing demand for specialised professionals in a strategic sector for technological competitiveness, industrial autonomy and the development of new capabilities linked to chip design, embedded systems, integrated photonics and advanced technologies.

Training, applied research and connection with industry

The Chair was created with a clear focus on university-business collaboration.
Its activity is centred on training highly qualified talent, promoting applied research and facilitating connections with technology companies and leading institutions.
Its main lines of work include advanced training in digital, analogue and integrated photonics design; the development of research projects with business impact; collaboration in RISC-V technologies; the design of embedded systems and SoCs; and energy optimisation in data communications for sensors and resource-constrained devices.

Three strategic areas: Photonics, Digital and Analogue

The Chair’s activity is organised around three major areas of specialisation.

  • The Photonics Area works on specialised training in silicon photonics and on research projects related to integrated photonic sensors and optical systems for wireless communications.
  • The Digital Area focuses on advanced microprocessors, alternative architectures, heterogeneous embedded systems, accelerators, reconfigurable architectures and intelligent applications adapted to embedded platforms.
  • The Analogue Area addresses communication systems based on baseband processing, integrated transceivers for next-generation communications and projects linked to RF design and quantum technologies.

A project to generate talent and strengthen the technology ecosystem

The UMA CHIP Chair seeks to contribute to the technological development of the region by connecting training, research, companies and knowledge transfer.
Its purpose is to train the people who will lead the field of microelectronics in the coming years, foster cutting-edge research in key areas and strengthen collaboration with leading companies in the sector. In this way, the initiative helps reinforce the microelectronics industrial ecosystem and position Málaga as a relevant node within Spain’s semiconductor landscape.
